My Boy at the Window | Season of Motherhood (March 2020) | Artefact Motherhood Project

Welcome to ARTEFACT MOTHERHOOD - a project shared with other international female artists who are documenting our journeys as mothers and creating memories for our children through our photographs and words.

"Seasons of Motherhood" is a new series in this project, where we tell a story with one picture that depicts our current season of motherhood.

We woke up late this morning. I was still in bed when you and your brother both came into our bedroom. I was lying in bed but reading. You started to climb onto the bed and onto the windowsill. I asked you not to. You didn’t listen. It’s a school day, so I asked you and your brother to go and get changed from your pjs. You remained sitting there. We are at this stage in your childhood, where you are starting to push against boundaries and exert your own thoughts and independence.

There have been evenings when your dad and I have made remarks or had conversations about this newfound independence of yours. We are not concerned or worried but instead quietly pleased with the confidence that is growing in you. You are our shy, smart, sweet, sensitive and sensible one, who never seeks confrontation and adore your brother massively.

You started mumbling that you didn’t want to go to school and you hate Wednesdays. I asked you why. You replied that it’s guided reading day and RE at school on Wednesday; subjects that you are not that keen on and find boring. Deep down I understand. It’s hard, as a child, to like every subject that you are taught; let alone even harder to understand the point of learning it. Even if I say something to encourage you, you say something back in return. It’s the season of motherhood that I find myself in right now.

Yes, going to school can be hard some days, but you will get through it. I dare say, both me and you.
