Snow Day in Lockdown January | Documentary Family Photographer, Cambridge
January was a month where all the days seemed to blur into one. We entered our third lockdown in England at the beginning of the month and, with the schools closed, I was back to dedicating time to my kids with their homeschooling. We also hadn’t travelled anywhere or seen family and friends since before Christmas, so the usual joy and celebrations of Christmas and New Year quickly wore off. We prepared ourselves for the quieter days at home, although this was regularly punctuated with the sound coming from the kids as they played, or perhaps one of us expressing frustration with the challenge of homeschooling and trying to get on with work at the same time.
During one of those weeks, there arrived a welcome visit of heavy snowfall, which brought eager excitement in all of us as we watched out of the window and saw the snow settle creating a lovely white blanket over the ground. Hurriedly, we piled on our coats and pulled on our wellies to head outside and play.
By the time we came home, we couldn’t feel our fingers as our hands were numbed and frozen from having soaked our gloves wet while making snowballs and snowmen. It was surely a good sign of being out in the fresh air and playing joyfully in the snow. It was just what we needed to break the monotony and suffocation of these long days spent indoors running on the same loop.
